LOCAL RADIO DAY 2023

FRIDAY 20th OCTOBER

Radio stations nationwide are celebrating the everyday people and organisations that go the extra mile, make a difference and elevate their communities with our 2023 theme:

🏆COMMUNITY HEROES🏆

Join us in 2023 by showcasing ‘community heroes’ in your local area. Ask your listeners for their nominations – from fundraisers, volunteers and charity teams to acts of kindness big and small. Then air and share their stories of inspiration!

Local Radio stations are the voice of the community, empowering, entertaining and informing their listeners. You are our community heroes! We will be spotlighting some of the incredible stations that sign-up this year.

WHAT WE DO

Local Radio Day highlights the value of local radio to the communities it serves.

The annual event is in its eighth year and is coordinated by Sound Vision.

Sound Vision are a charity dedicated to empowering individuals and communities through personal development, education, creativity and communications.

The day was created in 2015 by UKRD to bring together stations on a national level in celebration of the unique relationship between local broadcasting and their listeners.

Maxine Stride, Natalie Randall, Pete Helmore and Dom Chambers are the same volunteer team that has been working hard to coordinate celebrations every year since 2019.

If you are involved in the day and want to share your stories and ideas, please do get in touch with us.

Thank you to our partners:

Community Media Association, Local Media Network, The Radio Hub,

The Radio Academy, Local Radio Support ,

and all the local radio stations who will join us in 2023!

Sound Vision couldn’t coordinate the day without support. A heartfelt thank you to our wonderful audio partners this year…

TM Studios for producing our sung jingles. Based out of Dallas Texas, but with UK offices in Salford’s MediaCityUK, TM Studios works with many of the world’s leading radio stations. In the UK you’ll hear TM’s work on national brands including Boom Radio and Nation Radio, as well as numerous community and streaming broadcasters.

And thank you to Devaweb for the spoken imaging. Established in 1999, Devaweb’s goal is to ensure that every radio station can sound awesome, regardless of size or budget. Every week, the Devaweb team create station imaging, promos, sponsor tags and commercials for stations across the UK and around the world. They’re also proud to be heard on more community stations than any other production company.

THE LAST EIGHT YEARS

Take a scroll through our participation page for inspiration and ideas from previous years.

CELEBRATE THE SOUND!

Last year our theme was ‘Celebrate the Sound!’ and our partners at Local Radio Support launched a month-long pop-up station ‘Sound Radio UK’, which featured audio from stations across the UK. The day captured the vibrant relevance of local radio which has been enjoying a timely resurgence in the UK.

LOVE YOUR PLACE

In 2021 our theme was ‘Love Your Place’ and over 250 radio stations including all BBC local stations joined us to celebrate. Listeners and presenters were encouraged to share their favourite locations – in particular the special spots which meant the most during challenging times.

COMMUNITIES MAKING WAVES: TURNING THE TIDE ON ISOLATION

Looking further back our 2020 theme was ‘Communities making waves: turning the tide on isolation.’ Stations across the country highlighted how people inspired and helped others within their local communities. The extraordinary achievements that come from caring for and supporting each other over the pandemic were both reflected and amplified by local radio.

2015 – 2019 celebrations highlighted the value of local radio and the unique relationship between stations and their listeners.
